Photo by Maria Elena Perez At an intimate gathering of the Friends of the 59th Street Playground Association at Goldie Maple Academy on Thursday, March 23, finalizations for the It’s My Park Day spring event were discussed.

The annual event, which will take place on Saturday, April 22, will be a celebration of Earth Day where volunteers will be able to clean, paint and plant flowers at the Beach 59th Street Playground.

President of the Friends of the 59th Street Playground Association Florence Ferguson is excited about the annual gathering and looks forward to making the playground look it’s best for the community.

“Wherever our children are is the heart of the community,” said Ferguson. “We want to know what our community wants to see happen to our playground.”

During the event, volunteers will hand out surveys to find out what the community wants to see in their local playground. Ferguson believes that community feedback is crucial in making the playground a great space for children in the peninsula.

The park day event will also include activities for kids and a teachable moment – an info session that will teach participating children about the importance of Earth Day.

“When the kids in the neighborhood see activities going on, they tend to come out,” said Ferguson.

It’s My Park Day will be happening from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 22. The meet-up location will be at the Comfort Station at Beach 60th Street.

Founded in September of 2015, the Friends of the Beach 59th Street Playground is an association of residents from the community whose mission is to beautify and renovate the playground.
